RESNA RESNA is pleased to announce two exciting and rewarding student competitions for the 2007-2008 Academic Calendar: the Student Scientific Paper Competition and the Student Design Competition for the 2008 Conference of RESNA, the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America. Enclosed are flyers describing the two competitions. The Student Scientific Paper Competition (SSPC) promotes quality scientific and engineering research in the field of rehabilitation and assistive technologies. In its 12th year, this competition is intended to encourage students from a variety of disciplines to address contemporary issues in this field through research and to submit their papers for presentation at the RESNA Annual Conference. The SSPC focuses on the rigorous use of research methods and is therefore based on the scientific and engineering merit of the research and on the quality of the paper itself. SSPC Submission Deadline: January 14, 2008 The Student Design Competition (SDC) is open to students from any discipline who have a creative and innovative design that will assist an individual with a disability to function more independently. Entries are judged on originality, quality of design, and usefulness to persons with disabilities. The RESNA SDC has a long history of providing a forum for the work of energetic students representing a wide variety of disciplines including mechanical, electrical, and biomedical engineering, computer information science, and architecture. SDC Submission Deadline: May 5, 2008
Eligibility and Prizes All graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to participate. Five winners of the Student Scientific Paper Competition will receive a $1,000 honorarium (for travel and accommodations), complimentary conference registration, and the opportunity to present their research in a dedicated session during the RESNA Annual Conference in Washington, DC, June 26-30, 2008. Finalists for the Student Design Competition will receive complimentary travel, accommodations, and conference registration and will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their prototypes in the Exhibit Hall. Five winners of the SDC will be selected onsite during a special judging session and present their work at a formal paper session. Scientific Papers that pass the first round of review and finalists in the Design Competition will also have their papers printed in the Conference Proceedings. Lincoln Design Contest Some teams may wish to submit a copy of their final report (modified slightly to meet contest guidelines) to the Lincoln Design Contest, which is the foremost national competition for student designers. Students may submit papers representing their work on design, engineering, or manufacturing problems relating to any type of building, bridge structure machine, product or mechanical apparatus; or arc welding research, testing, procedure or process development. Reports prepared for course work, projects, or theses are eligible to be submitted as entries. Entry forms and information can be found here. NISH National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation & Design The purpose of the NISH National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation & Design is to encourage college students to design creative technological solutions to barriers that prevent people with disabilities from entering or advancing in the workplace. NISH will accept functioning prototypes or systems that create greater access to employment for people with disabilities in these areas:
To ensure that these devices meet the workforce needs of people with disabilities they must be developed in collaboration with a person with a disability. BMEidea BMEidea is the United States' premier competition for biomedical and bioengineering students. BMEidea is a unique competition, in that judges rank entries on all aspects of biomedical commercialization, from product innovation to market need, and from regulatory strategies to social impact. Prizes of $10,000, $2,500, and $1,000 will be awarded to the three winners, at an award ceremony in April 2009. Many BMEidea winners have gone on to launch successful companies based on their invention. Imagine Cup The world’s premier student technology competition, Imagine Cup is one way Microsoft is encouraging young people to apply their imagination, their passion, and their creativity to technology innovations that can make a difference in the world – today. Now in its seventh year, the Imagine Cup has grown to be a global event. In 2008, more than 200,000 students from 100 countries entered the Imagine Cup competition. This year’s theme is "Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems facing us today."
