Student's Comments - Winter 2008

From student's course comments and personal reflections:

General comments:

I enjoyed hearing from the many different people who work in this field, especially non-engineers.

[I] loved the course - looked forward to attending every week. [I took away] a lot of knowledge to apply to my other classes, groupwork, and life in general.

... the course was the most beneficial course I took all quarter and one that has made a significant impact in my career

The lectures on universal design and on creative needfinding were both very helpful and relevant to our process for this project.

I think Gary Karp's Life on Wheels and Teri Adams' Creating Problem Solving: Balancing Planning and Improv [lectures] did a great job on making us think about basic user mentality and interaction respectively.

I feel that this class is especially beneficial to undergrads who are going to take ME 113 the next quarter.

The combination of motivating lecturers and work on an individual project made this course extremely valuable.

Working with a team of engineers to design for users with disabilities as part of ENGR110: Perspectives on Assistive Technology was a unique, challenging, and fun experience for me this quarter.

[I] believe that a class on designing assistive technology (like this one) should be required for all mechanical engineering majors at Stanford.

In response to the question: Why did you decide to enroll in the course?

[I] wanted to apply design to projects that were not corporate based.

[I wanted] to get a basic understanding of what engineering is involved in assistive technology.

[I wanted] to get a feel for applications of biotech in engineering.

[I wanted] chance to work on an assistive technology ME113 project.

I am pursuing a career in medical devices and thought this course would give me an insight from other points of views.

In response to the evaluation of the lecture on Universal Design and Designing for Accessibility:

The concept of Universal Design was very useful and extends well beyond assistive technology.

From student's online course evaluation:

The instructor was very open to feedback on how to improve the class.

Really interesting class. I think more people would like to know about it, so it should be more publicized in ME 80 and other ME classes.

Great speaker line-up. Honestly, I was surprised how much I learned and took from lectures week, after week. I looked forward to attending every Tuesday. Thanks!

It works well as a survey seminar

This is a great class for those interested in medical devices and/or assistive technology. It's a great prerequisite to those taking ME 113 in the spring.

[I] really enjoyed the bbq at the end, and overall, the opportunity to get to know the speakers and other members of the class.

From student's emails:

Thanks for teaching the class this quarter - I really enjoyed it!

... the class was a great experience overall. I was able to see many different people's perspectives on disability and was happy to see that everyone who works in the field is very positive about it. Thanks for organizing such a wonderful lecture series.

I attended lecture today and it was absolutely what I was hoping for if not better. Thanks for allowing me to enroll.

I'm interested in pursuing a masters degree in Occupational Therapy after Stanford and I think this class is pertinent to what I'll learn in the future.

Thank you for a great quarter. I very much enjoyed the course. It really opened my mind to a lot of things.
