The Bourgeois Couple Take Charge

Left: William III   mezzotint by Jacob de Later, published by Nicolas Visscher.

A rare impression of a print that is unusual in presenting the stadtholder-king as a fashionable, even amiable, prince rather than a dour military leader.   Dressed in "vestitu commodo," he sports a lace neck-cloth, luxuriant periwig, and high-crowned hat richly ornamented with diamond pins--a costume suitable for court or William's favorite recreational pastime, the hunt.   From The Age of William and Mary, eds Maccubbin and Hamilton-Phillips.

Right: Mary II   mezzotint, anon.

The queen is dressed in "habitu commodo," wearing a high lace fontange headdress with long lappets, and the large pear-shaped pearl earrings, pearl choker, and diamond breast brooch which were essential ornaments of contemporary court fashion.   From The Age of William and Mary, eds Maccubbin and Hamilton-Phillips.
