Course Policies for English 174B
Lecturer: D. Christopher Gabbard, Ph.D. . . . . . . . . . Fall 2000

Required texts:
  • Course Reader ENG 174B (Gender and Politics in Literature, 1688-1750)
  • William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew
  • William Shakespeare, King Lear
  • George Farquhar, The Beaux' Stratagem
  • Daniel Defoe, Roxana, or The Fortunate Mistress
  • Samuel Richardson, Clarissa (unabridged)

Course expectations:   Students should read all of the assigned materials carefully before class in which that material is covered.   Keep in mind that some of the texts we will read and the ideas we will raise are meant to provoke thinking rather than to confirm our individual ideas or beliefs.   I strongly encourage you to think imaginatively and bring your individual experiences and your knowledge of literature to bear on the material at hand.   We are here to explore our history, our responsibilities, and our literary interests, as students of literature.

Evaluation procedure:

Direct class participation ("Class Discussion" key). . . 20%

Five one-page paper(s) ("One-page Papers" key) . . . 25%

Daily quizzes ("Daily Quiz" key) . . . 20%

Presentation ("Presentations" key) . . . 25%

5-7 page write up of presentation ("Write Up" key) . . .10%

No final exam; term paper

Attendance:   Because much of each student's most important work will take place in class, attendance is mandatory.   You are allowed two unexcused absences.   Three unexcused absences will adversely influence your grade.   Four such absences will result in a "no pass" for the course.   An "excused" absence means informing the instructor at least one day in advance.   Chronically late students will be warned once; after that, each late appearance will be counted as an absence.

Incompletes:   I will not permit incompletes except in the case of severe medical or family emergency.

Conduct: The Stanford University Honor Code, as defined in the Courses, Degrees, and Information catalog, governs all aspects of this course.
