Allegory on William III's Crossing to England in 1688.     By Romeyn de Hooghe.

William III stands flanked by Marshal Schomberg on one side and by a figure symbolizing the unity of the United Provinces [the Dutch Republic] on the other.   To the left sits England holding a portrait of Princess Mary [Queen Mary II, daughter of the deposed English king, James II and spouse of the deposer, William of Orange] on her lap and the fetters of oppression and slavery.   Behind her stands the English nobility and clergy calling on the Prince of Orange for help.   In the background are the Dutch invasion fleet and army.   From Jonathan Israel's The Anglo-Dutch Moment(1991). .
