There needs to be a new shift in focus for systems research. Performance--long the centerpiece--needs to share the spotlight with availability,maintainability, and other qualities.
About the speaker:
John Hennessy became president of Stanford University on September 1, 2000. He is a pioneer in RISC architecture, having initiated the MIPS project, and also led the Stanford DASH (distributed architecture for shared memory) project. Hennessy has a PhD in computer science from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. Together with David Patterson, he is the coauthor of two well-known textbooks, Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach and Computer Organization & Design: The Hardware/Software Interface (Morgan Kaufmann, San Francisco, 1998). He is a fellow of the IEEE, the ACM, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
