Conclusion

In this paper we have proposed new techniques to analyze the effectiveness of adaptive playout for preventing buffer underflow. We broke our analysis into three scenarios: A short clip transmitted at the maximum bandwidth of the channel, a long program transmitted at the maximum bandwidth of the channel, and a long program transmitted at 90 % of the available bandwidth, leaving room for retransmissions. We have found that if our analysis is verified by simulation experiments for the first two scenarios. For the third scenario we have found that as yet our results are inconclusive.

Finally we note that for short clips, the analysis will not hold if the duration of the clip is small compared to the mean durations of the good and bad channel states. We have suggested a means to adjust the buffer analysis for this case and suggest future work on that topic.
