All numbered exercises are from the textbook; exercises that start with ‘A’ are from the set of additional exercises posted on the textbook website. Data files for the additional exercises can be found on the textbook page.

You will sometimes need to download Matlab files.

  • Homework 1, due Thursday 7/1/10:
    2.1, 2.2, 2.5, 2.7, 2.12(b,d,g), 2.15(a,c,f,g), 2.28.
    Hint for 2.28: A symmetric matrix is positive semidefinite if and only if all principal minors (determinants of submatrices obtained by selecting the same subset of rows and columns) are nonnegative.

  • Homework 2, due Thursday 7/8/10:
    3.2, 3.3, 3.15, 3.16(a–c), 3.24(a–e), 3.32.
    (For 3.2, 3.16 and 3.24, you can skip the parts on verifying whether the functions are quasiconvex/quasiconcave.)

  • Homework 3, due Thursday 07/15/10:
