Stanford University
CS270 / BIOMEDIN210 : Fundamental Methods
Fall 2002

Background

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific foundations of informatics, particularly as applied to biology and medicine. Our emphasis is on the modeling of concepts and of processes and on the creation and adaptation of specific algorithms to assist in the automation of complex application tasks. Although information technology is seen as the enabling force to achieve desired end points, our emphasis is not on technology per se, but on the scientific methods required to build systems that process biomedical knowledge and data in useful ways.

Grading

Here is the grading breakdown for the class:

Homework - 60%
Final (December 12, 3:30-6:30pm) - 25%
The location of the final is Gates B01

Midterm (November 12, in class) - 15%
All students, including SCPD students, should come to campus for both exams. Contact the TA's if you have any questions/concerns.

The homeworks must be received by 5:00pm PST on the day that they are due. Submissions should be either by paper, fax, or e-mail (in order of preference). Each student is allowed ONE late class period for the homeworks during the entire quarter (e.g. if the homework is originally due Tuesday, it must be turned in by 5:00pm on Thursday).

Readings

Assigned readings are in the course reader, which you can purchase in the bookstore. Many of them are available online; the URL is provided in those cases, to reduce the cost of the reader. The CourseWork calendar, syllabus, and reader all list the assigned readings for a particular day's lectures. Please have the reading done before coming to class.

Newsgroup

Students are encouraged to use su.class.cs270 for any questions regarding the material and homeworks. The teaching staff will regularly monitor it; students should also feel free to answer each other's questions. For personal questions, you can e-mail the staff directly or visit them during office hours.

Disability

Students who feel that they have a disability should contact the Disability Resource Center immediately. Here is a link to their website.
