The Internet has had a strong impact on every aspect of our lives, small to large. In this seminar we will focus on two of the larger aspects-war and peace-mainly peace. Throughout the globe, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) use the Internet to coordinate and reach out to the public. The question is whether they are doing it in the most effective way possible. We will start by surveying the online activities of a variety of peace NGOs and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of their online presence. This part will be done in pairs and will include conflicts worldwide. We will then focus on one conflict area-the Israeli-Palestinian conflict-and will design and build a portal for NGO activities in that space. This will be done as a group project.
The project will teach effective website design and group project management. It will also provide an opportunity for students to contribute to peace activities via technology, and it is possible that there will be an opportunity to continue with the project past the seminar. The seminar will be strictly apolitical. The premise of the seminar is the value of human life and human dignity; all other personal or political orientations are to be checked at the door.
In the first part of the class, students will research NGOs and how they have used technology. In the second part, the class will work together to create a web portal for peace organizations related to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
Course grades will all be F.
