LaIR helper hours

What are LaIR helper hours?

LaIR helper hours are the in-person office hours for the CS106 courses. The LaIR is staffed by our awesome team of CS198 section leaders. Students come to the LaIR to get individual help with debugging assignments and answers to their conceptual questions.

There is also additional LaIR-style support offered by some student-run organizations:

LaIR Schedule

LaIR is open Sunday through Thursday, 7 - 11 PM Pacific Time. LaIR starts the second week of the quarter.

In-person LaIR queue

  1. LaIR is held in Durand 353 (glass conference room across from 3rd floor elevator).
    • All CS106 students are authorized for after-hours entry to Durand (use your Stanford ID card at the card reader outside the front door).
  2. To request help, come to Durand and add your request to the Lair queue
    • The request queue is managed online. Add your request on the LaIR signup page.
    • Be sure to properly identify your location when signing up so the helper can find you when your turn comes up.
    • All requests are handled in first-come-first-served order.

Remote access to the LaIR virtual queue

  1. Remote access to LaIR is provided to SCPD students, students with OAE accommodations that require remote access, and students who are in COVID isolation.

  2. Non-SCPD students who need remote access must first make arrangements by emailing the Head TA.

    • SCPD students automatically receive access to Remote LaIR for the entire quarter; no need to send email.
    • For those with OAE accommodations, please email the Head TA your OAE letter specifying need for remote access. Indicate clearly in your email the start and end dates you will require remote access (you may write "entire quarter" if that is the case).
    • If you test positive or receive an exposure notification, please email the Head TA with a screenshot of your positive test (with name and date visible) or exposure notification (with name and date visible). Indicate clearly in your email the start and end dates of isolation.
    • Temporary access is removed after your end date has passed.
  3. Signing into the Lair queue as a remote user is a similar process to in-person signup. Use the standard LaIR signup page and when adding your request to the queue, put your Zoom link in the location field. When your turn comes up, the helper will connect to your Zoom link.

  4. Students must not falsify documentation for remote access, attempt to bypass checks to access lair remotely, or share links or logins with other students for remote access. Such actions are in violation of the Fundamental Standard and will be referred to the Office of Community Standards.

Common questions about LaIR

I tried to sign up for LaIR, but the queue was closed, even though the schedule says LaIR is open now. What gives?

In times of high demand, we may need to close the queue to new requests toward the end of the shift. We do this to ensure that we have sufficient resources to assist all students already in the queue.
