Chapters 18, 33, and Appendix B

1. Name the two ways flies feed or bite:

2. List two diseases transmitted by flies that feed on horses:

3. Where do flies lay their eggs?

4. Which flies cause sweet itch in horses? What other diseases can they transmit?

5. What diseases can mosquitoes transmit to horses?

6. Can you get lice from your horse?

7. You observe a 6 -month old, potbellied foal with diarrhea and coughing. The foal is generally in poor
condition. What kind of worms do you think he has?

8. Can foals get worms when they are nursing the dam?

9. What are the most dangerous worms for horses and why?

10. What parasite lays yellow eggs commonly seen on horses legs and underbelly?

11. Your horse lives with a donkey, but the donkey is healthy. Your horse is coughing a lot, could he have
contracted a disease from this donkey?

How Does IVERMECTIN Work?

It kills worms and arthropods by inhibiting transmissions between neurons.... Therefore, it paralyzes the invertebrate parasites! It is relatively safe and nontoxic for mammals and the environment. Broad spectrum.

Other Dewormer Facts

Other dewormers (eg. Benzimidol1es) work by disruption of the cell cytoskeleton and/or mitochondrial function (PANACUR; RINTAL; BENZELMIN; EQUIZOLE). Some are very toxic, worms have developed resistance to many of them.

STRONGID-T (a tetrahydropyrimidine) and PIPERAZINE (a heterocyclic drug) also works by blocking neuromuscular transmission. The spectrum is not as broad and the safety margin is not as high as IVERMECTIN, but resistance is rare.
