The horse medicine course (83Q) is offered as a Sophomore Dialogue during the Autumn quater 2007 to Stanford undergraduate students


Participants will meet in VSC library in the Department of Comparative Medicine every Tuesday from 12:00 to 1:00. Class participants will receive a letter grade based on attendance, class participation, and the final examination score.

Classes will consist of discussion of assigned topics and the study guide questions followed by slide shows. Weekly assignments may be supplemented by video review, "handouts" from Dr. Green and journal club-type discussion of equine scientific papers. The emphasis of this course will be on a "problem-oriented" approach to horse medicine. The objective is to provide the class participants with exposure to common equine veterinary medical problems. Dr. Green's office hours are on Monday and Wednesdays, 1:30-2:00 pm or by appointment.

Oct 16 - Emergency Medicine: Chapter 39 and Chapter 40; Vaccination & Deworming and Chapters 18, 33 and appendix B

Oct 22 - Meet at the Red Barn at 7:00 p.m. - Discussion: Horse Nutrition (pizza provided to the humans)

Oct 23- Respiratory diseases: Chapter 25

Oct 30- Bacterial and Viral Diseases: Chapter 1 and Chapter 30

Nov 06- The Nervous System and Various Disorders: Chapter 24, Musculoskeletal Disorders: Chapter 22

Nov 13- The Digestive System and Various Disorders:

Nov 20--Class will meet at Red Barn. Neurological exam of the horse

Nov 27-Class will meet in RAF to review for the final exam, Nova video on careers in veternary medicine. A Veterinarian for the Life of Your Horse.

Dec 04--End quarter exam reviewed in class. Refreshments provided.

Dec 11--Exams must be returned to Dr. Green via email by midnight.
