Welcome to Chem 31A!

Chem 31A introduces you to concepts in stoichiometry, structure and energetics. These topics provide the foundation on which our understanding of chemistry stands. Throughout the quarter we will provide many opportunities for you to learn how to use information and knowledge in new situations and to develop lifelong learning skills.

The Chem 31A course is divided into four learning cycles that are carefully designed to introduce you to the topics in a logical order. Within each learning cycle, the lectures, sections, and problem sets will not only provide the opportunity to receive formal tuition on each topic, but also allow you to explore the topics at a hands-on level. In addition, ÒQuESTÓ exercises will develop your skills in writing and evaluating scientific literature. The first three cycles end with a midterm exam so that you can assess your progress and deepen your understanding of the material. The fourth cycle ends with the course final exam.

The Chem 31A teaching team is here to facilitate your learning. We hold two Outreach sessions per week where you can work through practice problems in a structured environment. Office Hours are held every day (except Saturday), which allow you to go over important concepts with our fantastic team of Teaching Assistants. We also encourage the use of the website Piazza to pose and answer questions between your peers. We are delighted to receive any constructive feedback as to how we can improve the course.

Before the start of class, please make sure to read the course syllabus in its entirety, including the Student Checklist, which can be found on the final page.  It contains very important information on course structure and grading policies. Most logistics information and common questions can be found here or in the course FAQ document online.

We wish you an enjoyable, stimulating, and rewarding course.
