The city of Santiago was founded in 1541 by the Spaniard Pedro de Valdivia.

Throughout the years, many buildings have been destroyed by frequent earthquakes, but some have survived either through sound construction or through restoration. Many buildings have been converted from their original use to serve a new purpose while allowing the original edifice to be preserved. These historic buildings serve as a testament to city’s past.
