Course Requirements

Examinations: A mid-term and a final examination consisting of some slide identifications, short essays based on slide comparisons, and at least one longer essay question distributed in advance and written as an "open notebook" response.

Paper: A term paper of about 8 typed, double-spaced pages using a font no larger than 12 points, on a subject related to the course but "invented" individually by each member of the course. Topics should be discussed with the instructor before work begins on the paper, and--in the best of all possible worlds--be shaped around one or more works actually on view in a Bay Area museum, notably the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. On the other hand, paper topics crossing material from this course with other classes (literature, history, history of science, philosophy, etc) are both welcome and encouraged.

Study and Review Materials

Course Readings: See the attached list of Required Readings, including the Course Reader. You are encouraged to maintain a regular schedule of reading since examination essay questions will derive from the readings. A list of supplementary readings, which are available in the Art Library but not on reserve, is attached to aid your bibliographic work for review, papers, and so on.

On-Line Study System: All of the visual material presented in the lectures can be consulted on the Art Department’s World Wide Web server. Students registered for the class will be automatically afforded access to the image server via the Leland authorization system. It will take approximately two weeks for the server to be up and running, so please stay tuned for further updates.

Review and/or Discussion Sections: If there is sufficient interest among undergraduates to schedule review sessions before the mid-term and final examinations, they can be arranged. Please voice your opinion to the instructor. Graduate students should confer with Mr. Marrinan about arranging a time and place for the weekly discussion sections.
