Course Requirements:

  1. Close reading and thoughtful discussion of the works assigned with the primary goal of understanding the diverse nature of Irish literature in America.
  2. Weekly reading responses of 100-200 words submitted to the electronic forum by midnight on Monday.
  3. A midterm exam (take home).
  4. A short bio-bibliographical research assignement in which you will conduct biographical and bibliographical research on one Irish-American author. The information you submit will be published in the Irish-American Liteature database maintained by the Western Institute of Irish Studies.A list of authors will be made available during class
  5. A final essay of 8-10 pages, double-spaced and typed. Paper will be an informed response to one of the works under discussion. Papers should adhere to MLA formatting and citation guidelines.
  6. Either (option one) a final essay examination (take home) in which students will answer questions relating to dominate themes of Irish-American fiction or (option two) a five page researched critical biography of one of the western Irish-American authors on a list I will provide. Students choosing option two will be expected to contribute their finished biography to the Irish-American West Project of the Western Institute of Irish Studies. (Students choosing option two must consult with me regarding their author choice).

Final Exam or Author Biography 20%
