Stanford University
CHEM 36 : Organic Chemistry Laboratory I
Summer 2006

Students perform experiments designed to teach methods of separating and isolating organic compounds from each other.  Experiments include identification of drugs in a sample, separation of chlorophyll and carotene from spinach, and synthesis of the light-emitting compound luminol.  The final experiment involves separation of two unknowns, which prepares students for the second quarter of organic chemistry lab (Chem 130).

Make sure to download the handout for the first experiment (synthesis of acetanilide) and do the prelab assignment before coming to lab.
