THE CENTER FOR ARABIC AND EASTERN STUDIES:
The Center for Arabic Language and Eastern Studies (CALES) is
a division
of the University of Science and Technology. Authorized by the
Ministry
of Education, CALES offers both structured and personalized
courses
that
cover all levels at various lengths. Recently moved to better
accommodate a rapidly growing number of students, it is now
situated
in
the heart of the city of Sana'a. A perfect opportunity
in a pristine
environment for those looking to enrich their life and career!
STUDYING IN SANA'A:
Sana'a, often called the 'Pearl of Arabia', is the world's
oldest
modern
municipal city still alive. The capital of Yemen fascinates its
visitors
with the beautiful old city that was declared the "Heritage of
Mankind"
by UNESCO. It is in this ancient modern city that CALES is
located.
It
is said that generally the language was preserved in all of
Yemen
but in
the old city this is much more the case. This provides an
absolutely
wonderful opportunity to practice first hand what you learn
within
some
of the most majestic souks (market places) in all the Arab
World.
Located in the mountains 2350 meters above sea level, the
weather
in
Sana'a breaks all the rules in comparison to much of the Middle
East &
Africa. The relaxing and moderate year round range for the Land
of Queen
Sheba is 15-30? Celsius.
COURSES OF STUDY:
The Arabic language department of CALES emphasizes the main
language
skills: listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing
and
grammar. Class sizes are limited (between 2-6) to
encourage
dynamic and
stimulating participation along with other students of your
level.
You
also have the option to have personal instruction that maximizes
your
learning ability in the shortest period of time. These two
options
are
consistent with our philosophy that small classes and individual
attention provide the optimal atmosphere for learning the Arabic
language. Regardless of the level or type of class you choose,
the staff
will personalize your materials to aid you where needed most.
The Eastern Studies department offers sessions tailored for any
group
wishing to have a better understanding of Yemeni/Arab culture,
history,
economy, or religion. Designed to be a broad or
in-depth,
these
classes are there for you. More information is available
on request.
