It was a hot day and Pop was mining in the river. He said that in two to three days we would be as rich as the millionaires themselves. We, as in Ma,pop,Baby Jonny, and I, had just got to California yesterday. Pop has been out all morning and Ma and Baby Jonny went out to trade gold for food and clothing and I stayed to watch the cooking fire. Tonight Ma is going to make corn, butter, and bread. I am imagining Pop bringing home 400-600 dollars in gold.
Yesterday Pop said that today I would get to mine. Just me and my Pop. I can just see it now. Hold on, I see ma with the baby Jonny. That means it is almost time to go with Pop mining in the river. Wait, I see Ma with our dog Josephine. We were supposed to leave Josephine back home, but when the time came to leave her she hopped into the wagon when we weren't looking and ate our leftovers. I went up to Ma and started playing with Josephine.
After a while Pop came and picked me up. I could not believe it I was actually going to go and mine with my Pop. As soon as we got there I saw a lot of men working hard. I asked my Pop why couldn't the women work. He said women aren't as strong as men. I, and most women, did not believe that. That is what the problem with men these days. They don't appreciate women and how strong we are.
The men asked my father if he had just brought me to watch or mine. He said that he brought to mine. The men just stood there in surprise. We mined for the rest of the day. When we got back mama had the whole supper ready. We ate while I talked about mining with Pop that day. Josephine ate all the scraps of food that we left on the table.
