Italian Women Writers in Translation

The Mission statement approved by the AAIS Women's Studies Caucus clearly sets down the goal of the Caucus: "to promote and develop in North America the study of Italian women and their works, under the umbrella of our main association, the American Association for Italian Studies." This list was conceived as one of the tools to help us attain that goal.

The list we have elaborated may serve all Italianists in several ways. It documents the presence of Italian women writers in the English-speaking world; it follows the trends of their emergence outside the Italian borders; and it may suggest why, how, and when their writings have become available in English-speaking North America.

Most importantly, the list can be consulted to find available texts for classroom use, acknowledges the important function of translators, and makes known which publishing houses welcome translations of Italian women's writings.

Clearly, this is a work in progress. We ask each member of the American Association for Italian Studies to contribute data about authors or works we may have missed, and about those that will see the light (in English) after our initial census was completed. Submissions should be sent to Giovanna Bellesia: gbellesi@smith.edu
