Home Page Refinement

and

Posting on the Web

Here are some basic instructions for creating a home page and posting it on the web. I hope you find it useful.

I. Preparing your account for web pages - public access

Try the following and if it you have difficulties call

Consulting at 725-2101 for assistance.

A. logon to transfer.edu like you do when you go to check your email, at the prompt where you type "pine" just type:

fs sa WWW system:anyuser read

or if this does not work for you try

fs setacl WWW system:anyuser rl

Of course, after this, you have to have a home page document to see anything and the first one should be labeled index.html

That brings us to creating a home page.

II. Creating a Home Page

A. Use Netscape Composer, Claris Home Page, Adobe Page Mill, or a similar home page maker or use html code.

I would recommend using an html book or Introduction to Netscape to learn the basics of html. It is not that hard but it is easy to make mistakes. There are on-line checkers which are useful if you go this route. Alternatively, you can just load the file with Netscape and look at it before uploading it. Here are some examples of html code:

<HTML>

<P>This is a paragraph</P>

<P>This is a paragraph with <EM>emphasis or italics</EM></P>

<A HREF="smithbio.html">Marshall Smith,</A>this code links a file such as Mike Smith's bio to his underlined name on your web page
</HTML>

If you plan to use html remember that your text files end in .html and your picture files end in .gif or .jpeg

<IMG SRC="fettermanfac.jpeg"> This code tells your page to go an get the picture and it will show up on your text page on screen just as you see it below

I used to use html code - by hand - now I use Netscape Composer, Claris Home Page, and/or Page Mill and supplement them for more complicated features.

B. Make and Insert Pictures in Netscape Composer, Claris Home Page, or Page Mill Documents

Netscape, Claris Home Page, and Page Mill provides instructions for inserting pictures you already have in their home page. Simply use the insert image button.

However, if you have something you would like to turn into a picture (like a Simpletext document that is a snapshot of your screen), you probably will need a GIF converter.

Once you have a GIF converter (they are free on the web) follow these instructions:

a. Make pages in Netscape Composer, Claris Home Page, or Page Mill

b. Make GIFS and JPEGS - copy pictures to GIF Converter - save as a GIF or JPEG.

c. Insert Image (using Netscape Composer, Claris Home Page, or Page Mill) of GIF you just made with GIF Converter

(Be sure to upload as a binary document not as an asci one.)

III. Uploading your files to the WEB: Fetch, MacIP, or WS-FTP

A. To upload your files use Fetch (Mac),  MacIP  (Mac), or ws-ftp (Windows).

Fetch sends your asci or text files to your account very nicely.

Host: transfer.edu

User ID: davidf

Password: xxx

Dir: WWW

Use the put button to transfer files from your hard disk to your WWW directory.

Use the get button to download files from your WWW directory (UNIX system) to your hard drive at home.

Use the Remote menu to delete selected files.

Use the Rename option under Remote to change a files name, e.g david.html.txt to david.html or david.jpeg.bin to david.jpeg

You need to send text via asci.

You need to send pictures via the binary mode.

To upload your pictures with Fetch, follow these instructions:

¥ select binary (there are three buttons - one is automatic, the next is text, and the third is binary - select binary)

¥ then click on Put - to put your pictures into the UNIX system/mainframe etc.

¥ then select your GIF or JPEG from your hard disk

¥ a screen will come on with a box - saying something like Binary II - don't use Binary II, click on the box and select raw data

Then select OK and you are all set.

MacIP alternative

I also use other programs including MacIP to do the same thing - but I would stick with Fetch in general. However, in case you need it I have provided instructions on how to use MacIP.

Go to Network and select Telnet, type in by host:

transfer.edu and under user name your account, e.g. davidf

Then go to Network and select FTP, type in by host:

transfer.edu and under user name your account, e.g. davidf

Then just bring up the files you want to transfer from your hard disk - the box on the left side. Open up your WWW directory on your UNIX server. Then select the files you want on your hard disk that you want to upload to the UNIX server and then push the copy button. This will transfer your files from your hard disk to the server. Remember to transfer text as asci and pictures as binary

WS-FTP

This program is the same as Fetch except it is for Windows users.  You can secure fetch and ws-ftp at:

http://www.stanford.edu/group/itss-customer/docs/ws_ftp.html

You will have to go through an authorization process to download it so just follow the directions on the page listed above.

IV. Final Test: Use Netscape to open your files on the WEB

A. The final test is to open Netscape and see what your files look like on the web.

Everything might have looked fine when you used Netscape to see how it looked on your hard disk and on the web - well the pictures might be scrambled because you transferred then via asci or you forgot to transfer them - who knows.

But this is the ultimate test of your text, pictures, plugins, etc. If it does not look right, it is time to isolate the problem, file, or picture and delete it from the WWW directory and upload a new one.

This is where the real fun begins - the refinement stage. Enjoy, it is engaging, engrossing, and time consuming, but well worthwhile.
