On Monday 9/9/02, our local coin club in Palo Alto, CA was paid a nice visit by Don Kagin. He told us about ongoing plans to develop the Old San Francisco Mint building. He is part of a group which wants to insure that at least part of the building becomes a Money and History Museum (as it was before it was damaged and closed in the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989). Below is the handout he distributed at the meeting. I added the link to the sfgov.org web page and reformatted it slightly. Please send a letter or email to Hala Hijazi at the addresses below if you would like to support this cause. Clint Cummins (Peninsula Coin Club) --------------------- September 1, 2002 Old San Francisco Mint Alert THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT Over the next 30 days, the Old Mint Task Force will be deciding which proposal to accept and grant a lease for developing the Old San Francisco Mint. If you agree that we should have a major portion, if not the entire Old Mint building as a Money and History Museum, we must get our message to the proper people to support the San Francisco Museum proposal. Our voice will be only one of many voices with an interest in the future of this facility. WE NEED YOU AND ALL YOUR FRIENDS TO WRITE LETTERS OR EMAIL. Here are some of the points that you should stress to the officials in San Francisco: 1. The museum would be an important National Money and City History Museum. 2. It would be of tremendous educational benefit for children, teachers and visitors. 3. Would you be willing to loan appropriate exhibits to such a Museum? 4. Would you help in promoting the Museum, visiting it, and encouraging other to do the same? 5. Would you support a U.S. Commemorative Coin program to help raise funds for such a Museum? 6. Would you be willing to serve as a volunteer in the operation of such a Museum? 7. Do you have any particular expertise that you would offer to the planning an operation of such a Museum? Also, urge your local, regional and state numismatic organizations to write letters of support for such a Museum. Let your voice be heard! Letters should be addressed as follows: Old Mint Task Force C/O Ms. Hala Hijazi Project Manager of the Mayor's Office of Economic Development 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 448 San Francisco, CA 94102 phone: (415) 554-6481 / fax: (415) 554-6018 email: hala.hijazi@sfgov.org Link to Old Mint Project on SF Gov web page: http://www.sfgov.org/moed/mint.htm THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING In order to bring this about, adequate funds will have to be raised, sponsors for each of the rooms found, and perhaps some endowments established. We need support from both Republicans and Democrats and from the private sector, too. If you have any "connections", please let us know. There will be more to come as events take place in San Francisco. Please call or email me at don@kagins.com with any suggestions. Thank you Donald H.
