Ideas for the Peninsula Coin Club

These ideas are from our "brainstorming" session at the March 1998 meeting. We wanted to consider some possible changes from the way we have been doing meetings and our show.

    Meeting activities

  1. Deeper show and tell - by a single member (and/or talk on a subject), 5-25 minutes, schedule by volunteering for upcoming meeting(s). [Clint]
  2. Minimize non-numismatic activities (such as raffles). [Howard]
Could defer mundane items to a board meeting. [Fred]
  3. Bourse night - trade/sell - small case format. [Ron]
    Bid board format. [Richard Sh]
    Could invite local dealers. [Xan]
    "Junk box" format. [Rich D]
  4. Group raffle - announce a theme and value range, participants bring in a coin of that type, raffle choices (one each; could have a rule that you can't choose your own coin). [Richard Sh]
    Winner takes all format. [Howard]
  5. Club auction - with minumum (so you don't have to bid on your own coin). [Xan]
  6. More of an active program/agenda. [Mark]
  7. Annual dinner or breakfast. [Richard Sm]
  8. Day meeting - to avoid night driving. [Richard Sm]
  9. Raffle trip to a show - air/travel expenses to a state or national coin show. Winner gives a full report.
  10. Summer meetings parks - June: Foothill, July: Mitchell, August: Greer. [David]
  11. Book lending/market - people offer lists of numismatic books they are willing to lend/trade/sell. Distribute the combined list and contact at later meetings. [Clint]
  12. Everyone should leave with a new coin. [Richard Sh]

    Show

  13. Club exhibit at our next show - a group effort which we create at a meeting. Promotes our club, and exhibits in general. [Richard S]
  14. Focus/specialize show - by targetting dealers of that specialty. Similar to EAC show. [Mark]
  15. Poster - 4' x 6' full color, on a theme, with club's name. Sell at show and in magazines. [David]

    Promoting the club

  16. Advertise meeting nights - including Channel 6 and 77. Attempted with Weekly; never appeared. Should try with Daily. [Rich D]
  17. Coin drop - distribute 200 or so Buffalo nickels, advertise in paper. Offer free membership to those who bring back a dropped coin to meeting. [Richard Sh]
  18. Don't promote beyond a minimum size - if more than 15 or so people at a meeting, less chance for all to have a say. [Richard Sm]
  19. Promotion at a school - with kids participating. [Richard Sm]
  20. Coin display at banks - approach local banks for a display area. Coincide with National Coin Week (April). [Rich D]
